Clinical features of serum ferritin elevation in newborns with perinatal pathologies
Azerbaijan Journal of Perinatology and Pediatrics

Abstract

Ferritin is a hollow globular protein of 450 kDa. It is a ubiquitous intracellular protein that stores iron and releases it in a controlled fashion. In humans, it acts as a buffer against iron deficiency and iron overload. The aim of the research is the determination of the level of serum ferritin in neonates with perinatal pathology, as well as to examine the role of these indicators in diagnosing diseases. Under our supervision were 34 newborns born to mothers with a history of obstetric complications, at the age of 3 to 2 months (30 term babies, 4-premature babies). 20 babies were consisted healthy group. We revealed acute respiratory diseases in 4 patients, TORCH infections in 21 patients. Different lesions of central nervous system (disorders of cerebral circulation; brain edema;hemorrhage- grade I, grade II; convulsive syndrome). Determination of the concentration of serum ferritin (SF) in newborn infants was conducted by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay Elisa, in the early days of hospitalization and in the dynamics of the neonatal period. Our studies have shown that infants with perinatal pathology noted the change in concentration of serum ferritin, the extent of which depends on the gestational age, 15 clinical form and severity of pathological process. Increase of concentration of serum ferritin detected in infants with intra-uterine infections and perinatal hypoxia. Thus the definition of serum ferritin to assess the clinical course of the disease process and can serves as a diagnostic marker of perinatal pathologies in newborn infants.
